E.R. Shipp

MSU Advisor E. R. SHIPP, an associate professor in the School of Global Journalism and Communication at Morgan State University, began her journalism career at The New York Times following graduation from Columbia University. She has three degrees from Columbia: master’s in journalism, master’s in history and J.D. in law. She has been a reporter and editor at the New York Times, a columnist at the New York Daily News and the Baltimore Sun, an ombudsman for the Washington Post and a freelance journalist whose work has appeared in a variety of spaces. She was awarded the Pulitzer Prize for commentary in 1996. Shipp is a native of Conyers, GA, who considers Harlem in New York to be her home though she lives in Baltimore.

LMU Advisor Tom Nelson is the Director of Student Media at Loyola Marymount University, where he has served as advisor to the Los Angeles Loyolan news source, ROAR Studios television and The Tower yearbook since 2003. He believes that the essence of good journalism consists of three simple things: accuracy, relevancy and responsibility. However, he also understands the practical challenges inherent in attaining those objectives from his more than 15 years working as a professional journalist. As an educator, Tom strives to create an environment that promotes student leadership, embraces risk taking and FAILs (First Attempts in Learning), and encourages high standards that lead to sustained excellence.

Jeff Gauger

LSU Advisor Jeff Gauger teaches journalism at Louisiana State University and advises its student-run newspaper and news website, The Reveille and LSUReveille.com. He worked for more than 30 years as a reporter or editor at newspapers across the Pacific Northwest, Midwest and South, including stints as the top editor of daily publications in Ohio, North Carolina and Louisiana. Jeff digs news, teaching and writing, and his work at LSU permits him to put all three together. He believes that teaching journalism, whether in a classroom or the Reveille newsroom, starts with modeling an ethos that exalts accuracy, fair-mindedness and a commitment to conversation rooted in truth and respect for others.

LMU Advisor Dr. Christopher J. Finlay is the Associate Chair and Associate Professor of Communication Studies at Loyola Marymount University. He holds a Ph.D. in Communication from the Annenberg School at the University of Pennsylvania. He specializes in digital media cultures, sports communication, global media industries, and political communication. He has a particular interest in the impact of digital communication on American politics and journalism, the 1st Amendment, global media events like the Olympics, and Chinese media industries. Dr. Finlay is the author of over a dozen scholarly works. KSU Advisor Kevin Dilley is the Director of Kent State Student Media, where he oversees the business operations and strategic planning for the 10 Media Partners that make up Kent State Student Media. With more than 500 students working to produce content across more than 30 platforms in digital, social, print, and broadcast, Student Media consistently wins national awards every year for a variety of student-led efforts. As a leader in student media, Kevin believes in empowering students as they strive to become professional journalists and communicators. He encourages leadership, accountability, diversity, collaboration, and innovation.

LMU Advisor Carol Costello is an award-winning journalist and former anchor and correspondent at CNN. Her distinguished career as a local, regional, and national broadcaster spans three decades, covering a broad range of world leaders, events, and politics. She has won an Emmy Award for her reporting on the crack/cocaine epidemic, a Dupont for her coverage of the Indonesian tsunami, and 2 Emmy award nominations for broadcast performance and best morning show. Carol also participated in CNN’s Peabody-award-winning coverage of Hurricane Katrina, and the 2008 presidential election. She now teaches journalism at LMU. Her current passion is healing the nation’s divide one small step at a time.
