RIP fossil fuels?

By Sebastian Ramirez Playa Del Rey Natural Gas Storage Facility down the hill from houses.Photo by Sebastian Ramirez Cars. Buses. Trucks. Trains. Planes.  What do they have in common? The majority are fueled exclusively by fossil fuels, and contribute half of all greenhouse gas emissions in California.  The state consumes 1.8 million barrels of oil and gas per day. About a third of those are produced in California, and the rest are imported. In L.A. County alone, there are 5,919 oil and gas wells, not including offshore wells.  Dr. Jason Jarvis moved to Los Angeles in 2015 from Atlanta. Previously unaware of any issues regarding the oil industry, he became invested after seeing a map showing all the active, idle and abandoned wells in L.A. County.  Ja...

Multimedia Content Creator, LMU I have made movies ever since I was a child and continue to pursue a career in film. However, more recently, with the world changing and awareness spreading, I developed a passion for environmentalism. These two interests brought me to Climate 360 News where I can combine two of the most important things in my life. This merge fuels my aim to spread awareness to the public about relevant and integral issues and questions and to ultimately elicit solutions.

Content Producer, LSU My name is Domenic Purdy (he/him) and I’m a 20-year-old junior at Louisiana State University. I am currently studying journalism at the Manship School of Mass Communication with minors in screen arts, political science and history. As an opinion columnist at The Daily Reveille—LSU’s award-winning student newspaper—I learned the power of writing. Writing has the ability to shift a conversation in one direction or another and for an important topic like climate change, the conversation needs to be guided now more than ever. Our generation is facing a flashpoint in the climate crisis and with the right words, us at Project Citizen can advocate for a better world and solutions to the climate crisis.

Content Producer, LSU My name is Nicole, and I am an incoming sophomore studying chemical engineering and environmental science. I am involved in LSU's Student Government Senate as well as multiple on-campus organizations. Some examples include Tau Beta Pi, an engineering honors society, and Climate Pelicans, a climate change advocacy organization. I believe advocacy for climate change is crucial as there are so many misrepresented voices and stories in this movement. These voices need to be amplified especially from communities that have already experienced the direct effects of climate change. I have been studying climate change and a multitude of environmental issues for years, and I have noticed these problems will only worsen unless there is immediate action. I hope to explore the ...

Content Producer, KSU My name is Madison King and I'm a junior at KSU studying Digital Media Production with a minor in Theater Production, and I am from Cleveland, Ohio. I am the current President of the Student Media organization KSU Independent Films and also serve as Co-President of the on campus media production organization F.A.M.E. (Films Advancing Media Equaliy). Climate change is important to me because I see how it has been affecting the world around us and the lack of consideration it has gotten to lessen its effects. As a part of this project, I'm hoping to be able to bring awareness to different underrepresented communities and share how their lives have been affected by climate change and what we can do to fix it through my experience in media production.
